Modern tales of a messy abode

  • As many of you know, I’ve been writing as a City Correspondent for the website Untapped Cities. Since August 2012 I have wandered around Montreal, discovering new aspects of the city where I’ve been living for the past 8 years.

Here’s what I’ve been writing for the past few months, along with a link to check out the articles:

During World War II, an internment camp kept as many as 400 detainees imprisoned on Ile-Sainte-Hélène. Today, the building houses the Stewart Museum but few people have heard about the area’s past which has long been kept secret and undocumented.

Montreal’s famous nightlife gained it’s reputation many decades ago, when people from nearby states boarded trains every weekend to escape the Prohibition. In the 1930’s Montreal’s main thoroughfares were lined with opulently decorated vaudeville theaters, cabarets and movie halls. Many have since been destroyed to make way for other buildings, but here are 5 that are still standing.

In Downtown Montreal, the Belgo building’s unassuming facade tells little about what hides behind it’s front doors. Within one city block, 27 art galleries share five floors with dance studios and artist workshops. Open to everyone, it’s great place to spend an afternoon

Montreal’s got a great museum scene but people tend to stick to the same few classics. Here are 7 off-the-radar museums that deserve to be discovered.

Travel guidebooks often refer to Montreal as Little Paris. Whether that nickname is deserved remains debatable. However, it’s clear that Montreal is a great place to eat like a Parisian, without having to buy a plane ticket. Here are 13 places to eat like a Parisian without leaving the island.

  • Last Sunday we headed to the greenhouses that are located inside the premises of the Jardin Botanique (Botanical garden) of Montreal.

Until April 21st, you can stroll through a giant aviary where thousands of butterflies are set free. The yearly event is called Butterflies Go Free. Here’s a glimpse of how beautiful it is:

  • These photos are long overdue. It’s already been 3 months since we came back from our road trip in the Deep South of the USA. We spent most of our time in New Orleans and the Cajun Country of Louisiana, but we also road tripped over through the whole state of Mississippi and on to the cities of Memphis and Nashville, Tennessee.

Here are some of the photos of our short time (2 1/2 days) traveling through the two cities with major musical history.

Graceland, quite a small home for such a rich man. We felt like we were visiting the Mecca for fans of Elvis Presley.

We didn’t get as many pictures in Nashville because it was pouring rain during the majority of our time spent there. However, we didn’t let that dampen our spirits! We did manage to go to the Country music hall of fame, the Frist center for the visual arts, Third Man Records, Mas Tacos and we went out for a concert.

  • Let’s pick up the travel bucket list where we left off. Two months ago, I prepared a playlist of songs from Argentina. Before that, we’d made stops in Brazil and Sweden.

The next country on my travel bucketlist is Turkey. I’ve already had the pleasure of visiting Turkey for a few days in 2009, when my boyfriend and I stopped there during a crazy trip through Greece, Bulgaria, Turkey and Italy. We had enough time to see the classic tourist attractions (Aya Sophia, Blue Mosque, Topkapi, Grand Bazaar) and we walked a bit in Kadikoy and Beyoglu but we really only got to scratch the surface in terms of things to do and see in this incredible city. • There’s something about New Orleans. The city’s marching to the beat of a different drummer and it’s up to you to catch up to the rhythm and join the parade. Like they say, let the good times roll!
